A Study on the Depression, Family Support and Life Satisfaction in the Elderly

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: This study aimed to understand the relations between depression, family support, and life satisfaction of the elderly, and the factors having effects on their life satisfaction.
Methods: Targeting 114 older adults aged 65 years and older in W city, data were collected for five days from July 3rd to 7th 2017. Using the SPSS/WIN 23.0 Program, data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression.
Results: The scores for depression, family support, and life satisfaction of the elderly were 3.90 out of 15, 4.11 out of 5.0, and 3.63, respectively. Depression in the elderly showed negative correlations with life satisfaction (r=-.59, p<.001) while family support showed positive correlations with life satisfaction (r=.59, p<.001). The biggest influencing factor on life satisfaction was the family support (β=.38).
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, we suggest to develop and apply the actual programs to increase life satisfaction by seeking for measures to decrease depression and enhance family support in the elderly.
